5 Games to Play in the Driveway Right Now
Fun and easy ideas to bust out when the kids have already played hopscotch 159302 times.
Playgrounds might be closed this summer, but don't worry! You still have your driveway, a wide open space for games of all sorts, and best of all, you don't even have to wait your turn for the swings or slide. Here are five out-of-the-box ideas to make your driveway the kids' new favorite play destination...
1. Car Wash
The best games are those that work double time, and this "car wash" allows kids to have a ball while also getting some much-needed cleaning done. Set them up with a bucket of soapy water, sponge, and hose and let them go wild. If you have a sprinkler, they can drive through in their own toy vehicle (Cue the nostalgia!) at the "end" to rinse off.
2. Map Your Dream City
Wish you lived between two ice cream shops? Or had five town pools to choose from? Yeah, us too. Have kids bring their ideal world to life using sidewalk chalk. It's an easy way to bring elements of dramatic play outside, and they can always erase with water if they want to make a design change — no work permits required.
3. Time Trials
For your little ones who have a need for speed and like some *friendly* competition, use time trials to test their skills! Set up a "track" around the driveway and have them run, bike, skip, or skate to see how fast they can go and if they can beat their personal records. Bonus: keep track of times on a weekly basis so they can see their improvements at the end of the summer.
4. Sight Word Islands
This is a great game if you have a child who's learning how to read. To start, draw a big "winning" circle in the center of your driveway. Make a path for each player using smaller "sight word" circles that move away from the center circle. Each player starts at the end of their path, and to get to the winning circle in the middle, they must jump on each site word and read it aloud before continuing to the next.
5. At-Home Drive-In Movie Theatre
Bring one of the best parts of summer nights to your own driveway! Secure a sheet to the side of your garage or house, and place a projector on top of your car to create a DIY drive-in movie theatre. Load up the trunk of your car with blankets, snacks, and don't forget to wear the required attire: Primary PJs.
